Current Sensor ICs

Current sensors ICs are designed to generate signals proportional to the current detected within a circuit. These high-isolation current sensors provide precise low-resistance measurements devoid of external isolation modules. These sensors are capable of measuring AC and DC voltage with signals that can be stored or displayed for future analysis. 

Types of current sensor ICs

These sensors are classified into two categories and include:

  • In-line sensors – designed to be mounted as the circuit’s integral part.
  • Clamp-type sensors –capable of being clamped around the measured wire.

The Technology of Current Sensors

  • Inductive: Inductor sensors feature coils with wires that carry current that passes through them, which is proportional to the current flow in the coil. This current is then converted and measured.
  • Hall Effect: The hall effect sensors are comprised of three circuits, i.e., a hall effect, a core, and signal conditioning circuits. Sensors operate by passing currents via a magnetically permeable core used to concentrate the magnetic field of a conductor. The energized hall component produces a measurable and potential amplified variation upon exposure to the core’s magnetic field.
  • Magnetoresistive: The rise and fall of resistance are proportional to the current flow distance, which flows through the plate to change the value of its resistance. For instance, longer current flow fluctuates the resistance, causing it to increase or decrease at a shorter distance.
