Voltage Regulators

What are voltage regulators?

A system created to automatically maintain a constant voltage is known as a voltage regulator. Negative feedback or a straightforward feed-forward architecture can be used in a voltage regulator. It could make use of electrical parts or an electromechanical mechanism. It may be used to control one or more AC or DC voltages, depending on the design. Electronic voltage regulators are used to regulate the DC voltages required by the CPU and other components in devices like the computer power supply.

Voltage regulators manage the plant's output in central power plant generators and automotive alternators. A voltage regulator can be installed at a substation or along distribution lines in an electric power distribution system to ensure that all customers receive a constant voltage regardless of how much power is consumed from the line.

Regulator specifications

The output voltage can be automated constantly within the specified constraints. This regulation is characterized by several factors:

  • Load regulation is the variation in output current for a specific change in overload current, such as frequently 15 mV, maximum of 100 mV for load voltage between 5 mA and 1.4 A, at some pre-defined temperature and input voltage.
  • The ratio of output to input change or the output voltage change across the whole specified input voltage range, for example, "plus or minus 2 percent for input voltages between 90 V and 260 V, 50-60 Hz," are two ways to describe line regulation of input regulation.
  • The temperature coefficient of the generating voltage is the variation with temperature, such as the average temperature over a given temperature change.
  • The initial accuracy of a current regulator is usually called the voltage accuracy; without taking into account the impact of temperature or aging on output precision, the voltage accuracy" is the deviation in output voltage for a specific regulator.
  • Drop out voltage is the smallest difference between the input and output voltages at which the regulator can still provide the required current known as the dropout voltage. The dropout voltage is the input-output difference at which the voltage regulator will no longer sustain regulation. The reduced output voltage will be the outcome of a further input voltage decrease. This value is influenced by junction temperature and load.
  • Absolute maximum ratings are specified for regulator parts, including the maximum input voltage, maximum power dissipation at a specific temperature, maximum continuous and peak output currents (often internally restricted) that may be utilized, etc.

MC79L00 Linear voltage regulator, ON Semiconductor The MC79L00 series linear voltage regulator by ON Semiconductor is a negative voltage regulator. This family has a fixed output voltage of 5 V, 12 V or 15 V. There is no need for any external devices and is suitable for applications that require 100 mA. The ON Semiconductor MC79L00 range features the Internal short circuit current limiting and also the thermal overload protection making them a robust Integrated circuit (IC). Applications include on card regulation or where a negative voltage level with a small current output is needed. There are no external devices required for operation. Pb-Free Packages available
