Solder

Solder wire is a fusible alloy metal having the capability of a low-temperature melting point, utilized to permanently connect two or more metals that have a higher melting point. Soldering is the method typically used in the electrical industry for printed circuit boards and electronic devices, jewelry designing, and pipework in plumbing; basically, soldering is carried out with the help of a soldering iron.

Our range of soldering wire is comprised of different products from leading brands like Felder Lottechnik, MBO, Multicore, and Weller that contain a wide variety of wire diameters and lead content.

What is Solder Made of?

According to the manufacturer and the intended purpose, different alloys are utilized in solder since various applications call for various materials. Soft solder may be purchased commercially, with tin concentrations ranging from 5 to 70 percent. Greater tensile strength is achieved with higher tin content, with a 60/40 ratio being a common balance. It is also possible to get lead-free solder, which was developed in response to calls to eliminate or minimize dangerous elements in consumer electronics and frequently has a lower melting point than lead-based alloys.

What Forms of Soldering are there?

Most soldering is provided in wire form, and different wire diameters are available to suit different applications and connections. Although solder granules are best for use with soldering equipment and tinning crucibles, these tiny solder pellets are also popular for use in jewelry manufacturing. For connecting surface mount electrical components and using printed circuit boards (PCBs), paste solder is the best option. It is a sticky paste that is printed or painted onto a board.

What is the Best Type of Solder to Use?

The best solder type that is typically used is as follows:

  • Kester Solder. First on our list is the Kester Solder, a 0.031-inch diameter steel-based solder with very high conductivity.
  • Maiyum Solder Wire.
  • SONEAK 60/40 Tin Lead Solder.
  • Austor Solder Wire.
  • Canfield Solder.
  • Mandala Crafts Store Rosin Core Solder Wire.

RS PRO 0.5 mm Lead Solder, 183°C Melting Point This rosin-based lead solder wire from the RS PRO range melts quickly and flows smoothly during use. Rapid melting means oxidisation of metal surfaces is reduced. This wire is used with a soldering iron to fuse electronic components to a circuit board. The mild flux present in rosin prevents oxidisation and the residue left from use is non-corrosive and non-conductive of electricity. With a 60:40 ratio of tin and lead in the wire, it's further resistant to corrosion. This ratio also creates mechanically strong solder joints suitable for electronic devices. The wire conforms to IPC-J-STD-004B specifications for regulating the flux used in solder wire. As part of the RS PRO series, it's been stringently tested to ensure consistent quality. Due to the lead content, this soldering wire is restricted to use by professionals and can't be used to solder products that comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards. Features and Benefits • Lead soldering wire • Composed of 60% tin and 40% lead • Diameter of 0.5 mm • Weight of 250 g • Rosin flux content of 2.2 % • Melting point of +183°C • Not suitable for soldering products complying with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards, due to lead content • For professional use only RS PRO RS PRO is our own brand range and brings you a wide range of high-quality, great value products offering you more choice. Trusted by engineers all over the world, every part of every RS PRO product has been rigorously tested against demanding industry standards they’re only given the RS PRO Seal of Approval if we’re confident of their exceptional quality, which means you can be confident too.

RS PRO SAC305 Lead Free Solder On July 1 2006 the RoHS restricted the use of lead based materials in the manufacturer of electronics and electronic equipment because of the health hazard of lead. The RS Pro resin-based SAC305 is a lead free, no clean solder wire that wets more readily than SnCu based solders. Features and Benefits • Leaves low level of clear flux residue which can be left safely on the PCB • Wets well to all PCB and component finishes • Ideal for all lead-free applications • Spreads like a RA flux • Available in different wire diameters • Contains 3% silver Applications Solder is used alongside soldering irons, particularly in securing electrical components to integrated circuit boards. The solder melts easily when heated, and cools quickly, meaning it can be moulded to secure components in place in solder joints. The quick setting nature of solder means it can also be used for light brazing. Because of its relatively low melting point, solder can be reworked easily by heating it to melting point and using a solder sucker to remove it. Solder is commonly used with SMD and through-hole components, with applications in repair, prototyping and production. What are the differences between lead-free solder and leaded solder? Lead-free solder is generally regarded as having a more positive environmental impact than leaded solder, and also as being safer for human use. However, lead-free solder also has potential production advantages. Lead-free solder can offer better lead spacing, which makes it more suitable for high-density components where pitches are tight. This means potentially better performance where space saving is a concern. The advantages of lead solder are that it has a lower melting point, which is sometimes preferable for hand working components. Also, lower working temperatures reduces the risk of damage to components and circuit board. Unlike lead-free solder, lead solder does not have a shelf-life and is less prone to losing quality a...

RS PRO Lead Free 3% Ag Solders From the trusted RS PRO brand, this solder wire is a resin-based, SAC305 lead free solder wire that utilises a synthetically refined resin and effective activator package. The flux formulation of this solder wire is ideal for wetting common Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and any components as it leaves behind a clear residue that can be easily removed with dry brushing for a cleaner look or safely left on the PCB after soldering. The alloy used in this solder wire conforms to J-STD 006 and contains 96.5% tin, 3.0% silver and 0.5% copper. Features and Benefits • Versatile solder wire that is suitable for a wide range of soldering tasks • Typical temperature of soldering iron tip for use with this solder is 360-400°C • Melting point is 217-219°C • Flux content 3.3% Applications Solder is used alongside soldering irons, particularly in securing electrical components to integrated circuit boards.
