Hall Effect Sensors

Hall effect sensors, also called hall sensors or hall probes, are specialised electronic devices that offer precise, non-contact measurements of magnetic fields in various applications. Based on hall effect principles, these sensors can detect the presence and magnitude of magnetic fields and measure positions, speed, rotation, or current. The output magnetic information is converted into usable electrical forms for further analysis. Hall effect sensors are solid-state devices that are favoured for their contactless detection, durability, and versatility across various domains.

Why Use Hall Effect Sensors?

Hall sensors are valuable in modern technology. They offer precise, non-contact measurements of magnetic fields. A hall effect sensor is inexpensive, compact, durable, and reliable device - a testament to the power of innovative engineering.

Two Types of Hall Effect Sensors

  • Analogue Hall Effect Sensors – These sensors provide a continuous voltage output that varies linearly with the strength of the magnetic field. They are ideal for applications requiring precise measurement of magnetic field strength.
  • Digital Hall Effect Sensors – These sensors output a binary signal, either ON or OFF, indicating the presence or absence of a magnetic field. They are commonly used for position sensing, such as detecting the proximity of a magnet.

In addition, hall sensors are also classified into unipolar, bipolar, and omnipolar sensors based on their polarity.

Ideal Applications of Hall Sensors

Hall Effect sensors are incredibly versatile and are used in various industries, including:

  • Automotive Systems
  • Industrial Applications
  • Consumer Electronics
  • Aerospace and Defense
  • Energy Sectors
  • Medical Devices.
