Ferrite Sleeves

Ferrite sleeves are equipment designed to suppress and scatter high-frequency noise levels caused by electromagnetic devices. Ferrite components are used to prevent Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) to and from the device and can be extremely effective. They are available in various diameters.

Causes and effects of Electromagnetic interference (EMI): 

When one electromagnetic field interferes with another, both fields are distorted, known as electromagnetic interference.

Some other common causes of EMI include; switching-mode power supplies, electrical contacts, motor bushes, and arc welders. All of these can cause issues, not only with the equipment itself but also with other electrical equipment in the vicinity.

The impact of stray EMI can be minor or severe. For example, when it comes to data cabinets and electric wire enclosures, power sources emit low-frequency EMI. High voltage flows can occur if cabling is not correctly installed and shielded, resulting in electrical noise. These surges can cause hardware damage and data corruption. On many levels, this has the potential to cause business disruption.

Ferrite is employed in various applications to mitigate these concerns, such as industrial generator parts. Ferrites are ceramic compounds that contain iron oxides and nickel, zinc, and manganese compounds.

Types: 

There are many types of sleeve material, shapes and designs designed specifically for each application. For example, ferrites are made of plastic, metal, steel, lead and magnets, which come in different shapes such as round, square and ring-shaped.

Benefits: 

  • These sleeves can reduce EMI emissions in household appliances. 
  • They can be embedded into the equipment or clamped onto a cable.

Applications:

Ferrite sleeves are often used in computer monitors, data cables, and other electronic equipment and circuits. Smaller sleeves are also internally used in printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electrical circuits. Furthermore, they are also used in medical equipment with many applications.

When designing electronic equipment, maintaining the electromagnetic interference in a device is the key to protecting components, mostly external equipment, from damage caused by high-frequency noise levels. Properly installed ferrite shielded sleeves are one option to suppress damaging EMI issues.
