What are Memory Sockets?

Memory sockets are a component of the printed circuit board manufactured for use in personal computers, laptops, servers, and workstations. A module socket is used to be mounted on the circuit board. DIMMs are the most common form of memory installed in computing or communicating devices.

What are DIMMs?

DIMMs are memory modules that are made of sequences of automated, random-access memory called RAM incorporated circuits. They consist of two detached electrical connections on one or both sides and a 64-bit way.

Types of DIMM sockets

DIMM sockets must meet the requirements of the system they are utilized in. The number of pins in a socket might vary across different kinds. Whether DDR or DDR4 RAM is supported by the DIMM will determine this. In general, the kind of RAM supported increases with the number of pins or contacts. For instance, DDR2 SDRAM may be used with a 240-pin DIMM, while DDR4 SDRAM might be utilized with a 288-pin DIMM.

What are SIMMs?

Computer memory expansion sockets known as SIMM (Single In-Line Memory Module) sockets are used to attach memory modules to circuit boards. Single row pins in these sockets connect to the system board either vertically or at predefined angles. Because they are not connected to the circuit board, the sockets are simple to insert or remove. Positive polarization is used in SIMM sockets to avoid improper memory module insertion. The contacts (pins) on SIMM sockets have anti-overstress characteristics and are heat resistant.

Types of SIMM sockets

SIMM sockets are found in varied sizes, and shapes and are characterized by the number of pin slots:

  • 30-pin SIMM sockets are the smallest as compared to standard sockets and can be integrated into traditional laptops.
  • 64- and 72-pin SIMM sockets are installed.
