RS Pro Thin Film Pt100 & Pt1000 Platinum Resistance Temperature Detectors From RS Pro a high-quality and reliable Pt100 and Pt1000 PRT (Platinum Resistance Thermometer) or RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector). These temperature sensors have a thin film construction for accurate and reliable temperature measurement along with a fast response time to temperature changes. This design is also resistant to both vibration and shock. The flat design of these PRTs makes them ideal for measuring temperatures on surfaces What is a Pt100/Pt1000 RTD? An RTD is a type of temperature sensor based on the correlation between metals and temperature. As the temperature of a metal increases so does it's resistance to the flow of electricity. This resistance can be measured and converted to a temperature reading. ’Pt’ stands for platinum (platinum wire or film) and ’100’ means the temperature sensor has a resistance of 100 Ohms at 0°C and '1000' means it has a reistance of 1000 Ohms at 0°C. Platinum is the most reliable metal due to it's linear resistance to temperature relationship over a large temperature range. What is a Thin Film RTD? A thin film platinum RTD consists of a thin layer of platinum (usually 1 micron thick) on a ceramic substrate. This is then covered with a layer of epoxy or glass for protection against high voltages and to maintain a high insulation resistance. The thin layer of platinum results in the sensor having a high resistivity and fast response times to changes in temperature. Thin film RTD elements are sometimes incorporated into protective housings or other types of assembly allowing them to be used in harsh conditions Features and Benefits • Thin film construction • High stability and accurate output • Linear output over a wide operating range • A fast thermal response time of 0.1s • Resistant to vibration and shock • Temperature measurement range from -50 to +500°C • 10 mm lead wires Applications These thin film PRT temperature sensors are suitable fo...

RS Pro Type J IEC Thermocouples with Adjustable Bayonet Probe From RS Pro a range of Type J thermocouple temperature sensors that conform to IEC 60584 standards. These Type J thermocouples have a durable design with glass fibre insulated wires surrounded by a stainless steel braid and a probe enclosed in a rugged 316 stainless sheath. The end of the probe is fitted with a spring loaded latch mounting 2 slot bayonet connector. This connector allows the thermocouple to be fitted securely. The grounded hot junction of this thermocouple allows it to have a fast response time How does a Thermocouple Work? A thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature in a range of different processes and consists of two wire legs made from different metals joined together at their two ends to form two junctions. The hot, or measuring junction is connected to the body whose temperature is going to be measured. The cold junction or reference junction is connected to a body of known temperature. When the measuring junction is placed on something hot a voltage or potential difference between this and the reference junction occurs. This voltage can then be converted into a temperature measurement using thermocouple reference tables. This process is also known as the Seebeck Effect What is a Welded Grounded Junction? In a welded grounded junction the two thermocouple wires and sheath are welded together to form one junction at the probe tip. These thermocouples have a fast response time because all the thermocouple is making contact with the sheath allowing the heat to transfer easily. What is an Adjustable Bayonet Probe? The probes of these thermocouple sensors have an adjustable compression spring 250 mm long with a 2 slot bayonet fixing cap. The bayonet cap screws along this spring and allows the immersion length of the thermocouple probe to be adjusted. Once in place the bayonet cap is secured into the equipment and firmly held in place. The advantages of this method of fixing ...

These thermocouple temperature probes have a durable construction and feature a 310 stainless steel mineral insulated flexible sheath that can be bent and formed to suit a wide range of applications. The thermocouple has a single element insulated junction for a reduction in electrical interference. One end of the thermocouple is terminated with a miniature flat pin plug for a quick and easy connection How does a Thermocouple Work? A thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature in a range of different processes and consists of two wire legs made from different metals joined together at their two ends to form two junctions. The hot, or measuring junction is connected to the body whose temperature is going to be measured. The cold junction or reference junction is connected to a body of known temperature. When the measuring junction is placed on something hot a voltage or potential difference between this and the reference junction occurs. This voltage can then be converted into a temperature measurement using thermocouple reference tables. This process is also known as the Seebeck Effect What is an Insulated Junction? An insulated or ungrounded junction is where the thermocouple wires are welded together and fully covered by but insulated from the outer protective sheath, often by the use of mineral insulation. The advantage of this is that there is a reduction in electrical interference and a stable reading What is Mineral Insulation? Mineral insulation is used to insulate the thermocouple wires from one another and from the metal probe sheath that surrounds them. The sheath is filled with a highly compacted magnesium oxide powder that prevents the conductors from making contact with one another other than at the fixed junction. The high density of the mineral powder enables the thermo...
