What are Current Transformers?
Current transformers, abbreviated as CTs, commonly referred to as core balance current transducers or current transducers, which are equipment designed to mitigate or enhance the current from a high voltage into a lower voltage and back to its original form. This was carried out so that the potential would be handled easily with the help of relays and computing tools, and techniques for electrical circuit operations. A current transformer is comprised of fundamental, important and supplementary winding.

How does a Current Transformer Function?
A magnetic flux is produced when an alternating current passes through the primary winding, and this flux generates an alternating current in the secondary winding. The ratio of this alternating current to its primary current is one. Step-down transformers are another name for current transducers. Once the current has been lowered, an ammeter can be used to measure and monitor it safely.
What are the Types of Current Transformers?
- Toroidal Current Transformer - They are structured like a doughnut and do not consist of a major winding. As opposed to the way that undergoes the voltage passing in the grid is threaded with the help of a window or opening in the toroidal transformer. Toroidal transformers provide a highly efficient connection with less excess distortion and leakage inductance to ensure limited access.
- Wound Current Transformer - The transformer's primary winding is physically connected in series with the conductor that carries the measured current flowing in the circuit. The magnitude of the secondary current is dependent on the turn ratio of the transformer.
- Bar-type Current Transformer - The primary winding, or one turn, of this kind of current transformer, is the actual wire or busbar of the main circuit. They are typically bolted to the current-carrying equipment and are completely insulated from the high operating voltage of the system.
