Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output
Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output are safety devices designed to use light for the transmission of information across an electrical insulation barrier. These devices comprise an LED and a phototransistor integrated into a single package and a circuit with the transistor on its output side. Due to the simple phototransistor or photovoltaic cell as an output device, optoisolators are distinguished among others. These are analogue because they operate without needing an external power...

These are analogue because they operate without needing an external power source. Thus, they are ideal for transmitting information (analogue) between circuits devoid of a power source.

Designs and Operating Modes of Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output

They come in many designs based on the combination of materials used to make the optocouplers. There are two operating modes of transistor output photocouplers: digital logic mode and linear mode.

  • Digital Logic Mode: In digital logic mode, the photocoupler’s output is either low or high logic.
  • Linear Mode: In the case of linear mode, the output of the photocoupler is the same as the input signal except for the amplitude, which is a factor of the current transfer ratio. It is crucial that the transistor must be in saturation to operate in linear mode.

Why are these Devices Necessary?

Phototransistor optocouplers are cheap, with simple bipolar output transistors used as photodetectors. They generate a current output proportional to the light intensity as their input. Furthermore, the low-level input current is increased by the transistor’s current gain, called beta. In addition, the integrated signal switches ON the phototransistor similar to standard transistors.
