What are specialized tools?
A tool is something that increases a person's capacity to change aspects of their immediate surroundings. Even though many animals employ basic tools, only people—whose use of stone tools stretches back hundreds of thousands of years—have been recorded as doing so. To prepare meals, hunt, make weapons, work with materials to create garments and useful objects, and prepare food, early tools made of materials like stone, bone, and wood were utilized. More diverse types of tools are now attainable because of the advancement in metalworking.
Functions
One can make the classifications of tools based on their specific function.
- Knives, sickles, scythes, hatchets, and other specialized tools exert a shearing force along a narrow face and have a wedge-like form.
- Moving equipment is used to move both huge and small objects. Mechanical advantage is provided to the user by several of the levers.
- Instruments like lighters and blowtorches cause chemical changes, such as temperature and ignition.
- The theodolite, ruler, glasses, square, sensors, straightedge, clock, phone, and printer are examples of guiding, measuring, and perception instruments.
- Tools for shaping, such as molds, jigs, and trowels.
- Fastening devices like glue guns, rivet guns, nail guns, and soldering irons.
- Tools for manipulating information and data, such as computers, IDEs, and spreadsheets.
Multi-use tools
The Swiss army knife is one of the oldest instances of a multi-tool, which is a hand tool that combines many tools into a single, portable instrument. Other tools have a main function and additional features. Given that they are numerous tools in one, this would also fall under the heading of "multi-purpose" tools. These instruments were designed to capture the attention of several different craftsmen who traveled to their places of employment.
