A polypropylene capacitor is the type of capacitor that uses the polymer polypropylene as a dielectric and is also known as a PP capacitor. Polypropylene is a dielectric material used primarily for capacitors required large and powerful capacitors. They are commonly utilized for high power and high-frequency applications like induction heating, pulse power discharge applications, and AC capacitors used for electric distribution.

Polypropylene capacitors are commonly used in many electric types of equipment. They are constructed using two thin-film plastic pieces and are charged with electrodes as their dielectric. They can be used in place of electrolytic capacitors, especially in applications where the voltage is above 500 V.

Characteristics of Polypropylene Capacitors

Polypropylene capacitors are widely available and used for various applications, even though there are some limitations to them. Some of the main factors regarding these capacitors are as follows:

  • Tolerance

Polypropylene capacitors are used for applications where increased tolerance is needed. You will be able to find capacitors with even 1% tolerance.

  • Stability

These capacitors are also used for applications requiring a stable level of capacitance because very little change of capacitance occurs over time. With the voltage applied, they are ideal for the purpose. Polypropylene capacitors have a temperature coefficient negative and linear.

  • Leaded Components

You will find PP capacitors being available as leaded components. Various ceramic capacitors are widely used, whereas surface mount versions are not available.

  • ESR

Polypropylene capacitors have low ESR and equivalent series resistance, and many also have low inductance levels.

  • Voltage Range

These capacitors can effectively operate with high voltages. Even the most miniature PP capacitors are known to work at voltages of 630 V or even 1 kV.

  • Temperature

PP capacitors work even at 100°C and sometimes with suitable de-rating. However, it is still essential to check for the manufacturer’s specifications before designing them in a specific component.

  • Capacitance Range

PP capacitors are available in a wide range of capacitance values. Commonly they are available in capacitance ranging from 100pF up to 10 nF and more.

Applications of Polypropylene Capacitors
