Electro-optic modulators (EOMs) use an electric field to change the material’s refractive index, while acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) utilise sound waves for the process.

  • Frequency Modulators – These modulators alter the frequency of the laser beam in applications like spectroscopy and frequency modulation (FM) communication systems.
  • Polarisation Modulators – They vary the polarisation of the laser beam and are done by using a waveplate or a Pockels cell.
  • Amplitude Modulators – These specifically modulate the amplitude of the laser beam, which is useful in applications such as laser displays and optical sensing.
