Inductive Proximity Sensors

An inductive proximity sensor (IPSs) is a sensing device that can detect metal targets using electromagnetic energy without physical contact with the target. The sensing range depends on the type of metal being detected. In normal conditions, non-metallic substances (such as dirt and liquid) are not detected. The best thing about this sensor is that it can operate even in wet or dirty conditions as it is immune to dust and grease. 

Working principle:

Proximity sensors create a detection zone by producing an electromagnetic field near the face of the sensor. As the detection of the metal target occurs nearby, the sensor switches ON due to the disturbance of an electromagnetic field. The sensor then switches OFF as the target moves away from the sensors’ release point.

Components of IPSs:

The IPSs have the following elements.

  • Connection interface:

A factory-installed cable, cordset, or built-in pin connector is equipped with a sensor.

  • Sensing face:

A part where the electromagnetic field created by the sensor emanates from here.

  • Mounting nuts:

They are supplied with each sensor.

  • Sensor endbell:

These parts have indicator LEDs that typically appear in this sensor area.

  • Sensor housing:

This portion of the sensor protects the internals of the sensor and provides the means for mounting.

Classification of IPSs: 

Inductive proximity sensors are available in two classifications: 

Shielded sensors:

They are also known as embeddable or flush mountable, which refers to the distance surrounding metal that the device can be mounted with the sensor surrounded by metal. As a result, these sensors typically have a reduced sensing range.

Unshielded sensors:

They are also known as non-embeddable or non-flush mountable, which refers to a metal-free zone that must be provided when mounting the sensor. The size of the metal-free zone depends on the sensor's size and the type of sensing range it has, for example, standard or extended.

Applications of IPSs:

These sensors have a variety of applications in different workplaces. Some of them are given below.

This sensor's consistent alignment and follow-through functions reduce waste and fewer system interruptions, thanks to its trustworthy detection quality. For example, the simple insertion process of items in cartons or packages through metal flags on conveyor chains; however, it also requires precision which needs these sensors for operation.

In hygienic processes like dairy or yogurt production, which utilize valves to switch system feeds from ingredients to cleaning solutions, then back when the sanitation process is complete. The IPS sensor is more resistant and has greater assurance of long-term, consistent valve operation. 

The metal detection qualities of the proximity sensor with advanced technology are helpful on packaging lines for canned products and beverages.
