Thread Lock

Thread lock refers to thread lock adhesives or threadlockers, a resin in liquid form that is applied to the fastener threads before assembly. Thread lock adhesives protect fastener threads against corrosion and tampering and prevent loosening and leakage by filling or sealing the gaps between the threads. These adhesives are easy to apply and efficiently dry, harden, and start curing by deeply flowing into threads’ grooves. Popular thread lock brands include Loctite thread lock, Rocol thread lock, and Jelt thread lock available inexpensively at Enrgtech.

Thread lock adhesives are available in different viscosity, strengths, and formulations, including liquid, paste, tape, and stick, varying on usage. Liquid thread lockers are typically applied directly to the threads using a bottle with a nozzle or brush. Thread locking tape is a pre-coated adhesive tape wrapped around the threads. Thread locking sticks resemble solid markers and are rubbed directly onto the threads. Additionally, threadlockers protect delicate components in various industrial, commercial, and domestic applications.

Potential Benefits of Thread Lock:

Using a thread lock offers unparalleled benefits, such as:

  • Prevention of Fasteners Loosening and Leakage – The primary benefit of thread lock adhesives is preventing threaded fasteners from loosening and leakage over time by creating a solid bond between the threads. This ensures the stability of fasteners.
  • Easy Application and Removal – Thread lockers can be easily applied using a brush, pen, or applicator. It is relatively simple and does not require specialised equipment. Though they make strong bonds or sealing, they can be easily removed.
  • Chemical, Vibration, and Corrosion Resistance – Thread lock adhesives provide excellent resistance to chemicals, vibrations, and corrosions by adequately lubricating them.
  • Wide Operating Temperatures – Thread lockers can withstand a wide range of temperatures, maintaining their adhesive properties in extreme cold to high heat.
  • Improved Reliability and Versatility – Thread lock adhesives contribute to the overall reliability of assemblies and systems. They are also suitable for use with various components and materials.
  • Cost-effective Solution – Thread lockers prevent fastener loosening and lower maintenance costs, thus saving money instead of buying new ones.

Three Primary Types of Threadlocking Adhesive:

Thread lock adhesives come in various forms, such as threadlocking paste, threadlocking wax, and thread-locking liquids. They are classified into three primary types, including:

  • Low-Strength Threadlockers – These adhesives are designed for fasteners (one-quarter inch diameter) that may require regular adjustments and disassembly with hand tools, including meters and gauges. They offer minimal resistance during removal and require minimal effort to break the bond.
  • Medium-Strength Threadlockers – These adhesives provide a stronger bond than low-strength variants and are ideal for fasteners requiring some disassembly but still need reliable resistance to vibration and loosening. Medium-strength threadlockers usually require the use of hand tools to break the bond.
  • High-Strength Threadlockers – High-strength threadlockers provide the most reliable resistance to vibration and loosening and are designed for heavy-duty permanent or semi-permanent fasteners assembly, such as in pumps and compressors. They create a strong bond and use specialised tools or techniques to disassemble.

Where Can I Use Thread Lock?

Threadlockers primarily prevent the loosening or accidental disassembly of threaded fasteners, such as bolts, screws, and nuts. They find applications in a range of facilities, including:

  • Plumbing and Pipework
  • Construction and Infrastructure
  • Maintenance and Repair
  • Automotive Industry
  • Electronics and Electrical Devices
  • Workshops
  • Machinery and Equipment
  • Aerospace and Sports Equipment.

Loctite Thread locking Adhesive The Loctite adhesive is designed for locking and sealing of threaded fasteners, which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools. This product cures when confined in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces and prevents loosening and leakage from shock and vibration. It is particularly suitable for applications on less active substrates such as stainless steel and plated surfaces, where disassembly with hand tools is required for servicing. The thixotropic nature of Loctite 2400 reduces the migration of liquid product after application to the substrate. Features and Benefits Cure time of 24 hours Medium viscosity Viscosity of 3070mPa/s Operating temperature ranges between -55⁰C and 150⁰C Certifications ANSI/ESD S 20.20: 2014 BS EN 61340-5-1: 2007
