Bootlace Ferrules

A crimp bootlace ferrule, also known as a wire ferrule, is a metal tube specifically used to compress stranded wires in multiple electric and electronic applications. These connectors ensure reliable connections at electrical wires' ends that need to be connected to a single terminal. Bootlace ferrules are usually made of copper or other conductive metals plated with tin or other corrosion-resistant materials. In addition, they come in various sizes to accommodate different wire gauges, and they are usually colour-coded based on the wire size for easier identification and selection.

Benefits of Using Crimp Bootlace Ferrules:

Using bootlace ferrules provides several advantages, including:

  • Crimp bootlace ferrules prevent wire fraying and maintain a neat appearance.
  • Reduce accidental contact with live wires, minimising electrical hazards and ensuring safety.
  • Enhance the electrical connection's reliability by reducing loose strands or connections.
  • Simplify installation, easy to install, and save time.
  • Improve ease of insertion into screw terminals.

Installing Bootlace Ferrule

To install a bootlace ferrule, the stranded wire is stripped of its insulation using a wire stripper. The exposed ends are inserted into the ferrule. A crimping tool, a bootlace ferrule crimper, compresses the metal tube, firmly securing the wire within the ferrule and creating a solid connection. The insulated ferrule collar should cover the stripped wire, providing electrical insulation.

Insulated and Uninsulated Bootlace Ferrules: The Difference

  • Insulated Bootlace Ferrules: These ferrules have a colour-coded plastic or nylon insulation sleeve covering the metal tube. The insulation provides added safety by preventing the exposed metal part of the ferrule from meeting other conductive elements, thus reducing short circuits. These ferrules are further classified into two versions; singular ferrules are best for inserting a single cable, and the TWIN version is responsible for bundling two cable ends in a single bootlace ferrule.
  • Uninsulated Bootlace Ferrules: Unlike insulated ferrules, these wire ferrules do not have an additional plastic or nylon sleeve covering the metal tube. Uninsulated ferrules are typically used in applications where the wires are controlled, and there is no risk of accidental contact with other conductive elements.

Typical Applications of Bootlace Ferrules:

Crimp bootlace ferrules are safety tools indispensable in environments and equipment with safety risks and where cables' ends are exposed. These ferrules are widely used in numerous applications and devices, including:

  • Electrical and Electronics Industry
  • Control Devices
  • Building Wiring and Installation
  • Automotive Industry
  • HVAC Systems
  • Robotics and Machinery
  • Control and Automation Panels
  • Switching Cabinets
  • Renewable Energy Systems
  • DIY and Hobbyist Projects.

RS Pro Uninsulated Bootlace Ferrules From RS Pro a range of high-quality uninsulated bootlace ferrules (also known as cord end terminals) for providing an economical and effective method of terminating multi-stranded wires. These reliable wire ferrules ensure that you have a positive connection when connecting wires to terminal blocks and captive terminals. What Is a Bootlace Ferrule? A bootlace ferrule is a metal tube or ferrule with (or without) a moulded colour coded insulating collar made from nylon. The ferrule is slipped over the end of a multi-stranded wire, crimped and then inserted into a screw or spring clamp connection. Where is a Bootlace Ferrule Used? When the end of a multi-stranded wire is stripped and placed directly under a screw terminal the strands of the wire will naturally fan out under the pressure of the screw. Some strands will go astray. This reduces the quality of the electrical connection and can also result in electrical shorts. When a bootlace ferrule is used it's flared design captures all the strands. These strands are then crimped together in the ferrule tube. The crimped ferrule is then inserted into the terminal to create an electrical connection Features and Benefits • Excellent electrical connection • Reduces short circuits • Tin plated copper tube for excellent conductivity • Crimped terminal can be repeatedly inserted and removed without degrading end of the wire Applications Bootlace ferrules are used on multi-stranded wires that are being inserted into screw terminals and terminal blocks. Applications include consumer units, circuit breakers, electrical control panels and any equipment where there is a requirement for a multi-stranded wire connection. How to Crimp a Bootlace Ferrule How to Crimp a Bootlace Ferrule Select the correct size bootlace ferrule and strip the end of the wire. Cut the wires to the same length as terminal and twist the strands together. Slip the bootlace ferrule onto the ends of the wire until the wi...
