LED: The Best Option for Light Applications

LED Light

LED

The rise of the LED has been an industrial revolution of its own kind. It has been swift yet quiet. It has barely lasted for two decades but the statistics behind it is thrilling. According to LED inside, the global market scale for LED lighting increased by 14% to $745 million as compared to $655 in 2016. Since LED went mainstream, the market for traditional light sources has shrunk. This has enabled LED to achieve a substantial market penetration. The LED market penetration is expected to hit 63% in 2022. What makes LED the most preferred option for light applications? Read on to find out.

Advantages of LED over traditional lighting sources

They last longer

The average LED lasts between 50,000 to 100,000 operating hours which is 2-4 times longer than fluorescent, metal halide and sodium vapor lights. It actually lasts 40 times longer than the average incandescent bulb. This means that the light will be replaced less frequently hence lowering the maintenance cost that would have been incurred in purchasing new lamps and paying for labor.

They are efficient

LEDs consume very low amounts of power. They produce more lumens while consuming less power. For instance, a 7W LED lamp will produce about 500 lumens whereas it will take a 12W CFL and a 40W incandescent lamp to produce 500 lumens. It has been established that one can save up to 60-75% of power by shifting from traditional light options to LED. Depending on the existing lighting sources and the LED one intends to install, you can save up to 90%.

They offer improved safety

Safety is one of the most overlooked elements when it comes to lighting. One of the biggest safety hazards when it comes to lighting is heat. Incandescent lights convert 90% of the power it receives to heat. This way, they generate a lot of heat. On the other hand, LED lights emit infinitesimal amounts of heat.

They are small in size

LED lights are very small in size hence consume less surface area.

They possess great Color Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI is the measure of a lights ability to reveal the actual color of objects compared to an ideal light source. LEDs have a very high CRI compared to traditional light sources.

Dimming ability

LEDs have the ability to operate at any percentage of the rated power (0 to100%). However, to achieve this, they require hardware that it specific to the LED technology. The advantage of dimming LEDs is that they become more efficient as the power is dimmed. Dimming also increases the lifespan of the LED lamp. You cannot achieve this with either incandescent or metal halides.

Lighting applications of LED

There are numerous lighting applications to which LED can be put to. Listed below are some of the common ones:

  • Street and road lighting
  • Parking garage and parking lot lighting
  • Billboard lighting
  • Canopy lighting
  • High bay lighting
  • Garden, backyard and deck lighting
  • Security lighting
  • Grow lights
  • Home and office lighting
  • Holiday lighting
  • Car lighting
  • Entertainment lighting
