It is a substance that used for joining different materials and resists separation. Bitumen was a tree known for this, and they also used bee wax for the coatings. Next to this, they extract glues from the fish, cheese, and horns of the animals. In the 18th century, this technology was modified, and in the 19th century introduced, rubber and other similar substances were. In the 20th century, we replaced natural adhesives and produced artificially made adhesives in the labs.

The requirement for aircraft, engineering, aerospace, electronics component, and polymerization has enhanced the need for adhesives. Now they widely used at industrial, commercial, and domestic levels.

What is Adhesion?

When we are joining two substances, the strength of the bond is the first thing to see. Some substances’ physical properties allow them to build bonds, and they have a positive attitude toward adhesion. Next to this, we check the chemical properties before joining the two surfaces. This helps us understand whether two surfaces can join or not. Three factors are under discussion;

  1. The surface of the substances
  2. Adhesive, the material we use to build the bonds
  3. Adherend

When we use adhesive materials, then the structure it builds with the surfaces should be strong. A strong bond structure makes them sticky, and these bonds are long-lasting. 

Next to this, the spreading and wetting quality of the adhesive material also matters a lot. Few substances have a greater ability to spread. This contact is also known as molecular contact. In which molecules of a substance build bonds with the surfaces. 

Adsorption Theory of Adhesion:

This theory states different substances stick because of intermolecular contact. Molecules exert some sort of force, which is known as violence force. These forces exerted on the surface of the adherend and adhesive. 

There are Four Types of Generalized Mechanisms of Adhesion:

  1. First is the interlocking by flowing the adhesive into the pores of the surfaces. The adhesive material is applied inside and edges.
  2. The next mechanism is interdiffusion, and this is the stage where applied liquid or paste diffuses into adherend materials.
  3. The Third step is adsorption, which is also known as a surface reaction. As the name shows, at this stage, bonding occurs. After absorption and chemical reaction, this reaction builds strong bonds. Here electrostatic forces are building among the surfaces. In the end, the interphase is done. 
  4.  Testing and calculating the strength of the joints. This tells the engineer how much force and weight a joint can bear.

What are the Few Adhesive Materials?

All natural and synthetic adhesive materials contain polymers. It is a giant molecule that is formed in the combination of thousands of monomers. This creates a chain of molecules, and this is counted as its strength. There are two types of adhesive materials, 

  1. Natural adhesive
  2. Synthetic adhesives

Natural adhesives originated from vegetables, oils, animals, and trees. If we analyze the demand for natural adhesive, it was very good in the past. After the inauguration of the 20th century, its demand curve is declining. Few of them are still in use but in limited industries. Natural adhesives are still being used in the following industries;

  1. Corrugated boxes
  2. Paper and wood products
  3. Bottle labels, bindings, cartons, and furniture
  4. Films, laminations, envelopes, and boards bonds

These made from renewable sources, and that is why they are in demand. Natural adhesives listed below;

  1. Animal glue is formed from mammalian collagen that comes from the bones and animal muscles. As the name shows it’s the main source is animal skin. 
  2. Casein glue is formed by mixing protein that comes from milk and alkaline. They used as an adhesive in wood and furniture bonds. 
  3. Blood albumen glue is natural glue extracted from the serum albumen. This comes from animal and is available in powder form. This is very much used in Polythenely the wood industry. 
  4. Dextrin and starch come from corn and other vegetables. Its main source is potatoes, wheat, and rice. We get this from plants, and it is soluble in water. These are good for packaging and wall adhesives. 
  5. Natural gums extracted from agar, a marine plant. When it is extracted, hot water is used, but for purification, it sends for freezing. Add to this, algin comes from the seaweed, gum Arabic comes from the acacia tree, and rubber latex comes from the hevea tree. All these adhesives further filter under specific processes. 

Natural Adhesives

In addition to natural adhesives, there are man-made synthetic adhesives. Because of the huge consumption, high cost, and variety of uses create a need for synthetic adhesives. These are versatile and good in performance as well. These produced with uniformity, constant properties, and similar structure of the substance.   1. Thermostats
  2. Thermoplastics
