The Mitutoyo 178-583-12E detector is a high-precision accessory designed for use with Mitutoyo portable surface roughness testers such as the SJ-210, SJ-310 and SJ-412. Offering both skidded and skidless measurement capability, it enables accurate roughness and waviness assessment across a range of surfaces with minimal measurement disturbance. With a stylus tip angle of 90° and 5 µm radius, and a measuring force of 4 mN, this detector supports standardised evaluation according to ISO, ANSI, JIS and VDA methods.
This detector drive unit is engineered to integrate seamlessly with Mitutoyo’s portable testers, enabling robust measurement in both laboratory and manufacturing environments. The switchable skidded/skidless mode allows measurement of typical surfaces (skidded) as well as complex, stepped or curved surfaces (skidless) without sacrificing accuracy. According to Mitutoyo documentation, skidless measurement is essential for capturing waviness and fine stepped features where the skid would otherwise interfere.
