Input or output expanders are a type of computer hardware that establishes connections that can connect more than one device by using a single port of the computer system.

How Do I/O Expanders Function?

This expander establishes a connection with a single port and outputs multiple connections for other devices. Such expanders are very crucial in taking advantage of simultaneously establishing connections among devices by using that port. This connection is typically accomplished by using USB and Ethernet ports. 

Popular Types of I/O Expanders

The two main types of input or output expanders are as follows:

  • Internal: The only component of these that the user can see is the expansion plate, which has the ports to which they can attach more devices. These are connected to the computer, often on the motherboard.
  • External: When an external expander is plugged into an existing port, numerous more connections are made possible. These gadgets are referred to as splitters when they are not a part of a computer system.
