Soldering is the process of melting solder and letting it flow between two metal joints to form a connection between them. The solder is usually melted with the help of a tool known as soldering iron. When the solder cools down, it creates a strong bond between both metals. Therefore, the solder acts like some metallic glue used to join metals together.
Purpose of Soldering Flux
The primary purpose of the soldering flux is to remove any oxides and impurities from the surface of the metal and prepare it for soldering by cleaning it like that. The oxides are usually formed because of exposure to air, and they can prevent the formation of excellent solder joints. Therefore, fluxes are essential to ensure that solid solder joints are created between the two metals.
Fluxes are purifying agents, chemical cleaning agents, or flowing agents. Fluxes can be used for more than one function and are used in both metal joining and metallurgy.
Some of the traditionally known fluxes include potash, charcoal, sodium carbonate, lead sulfide, lime, borax, coke, and other minerals containing phosphorus. In the smelting of copper, iron was also used as a flux. Therefore, fluxes serve as reducing agents to prevent the formation of oxides on metal surfaces.
