Slot drills are often compared to end drills because they have similarities, but there are also some differences. Slot drills are used on the edges and faces of materials and in the central part of the application, such as creating blind holes. These tools can also form parts of the precision milling cutters. They are made from steel, carbide, power metal, and HSS slot drills.
Purpose of Slot Drills
Slot drills are also known as slot mills and are commonly two flutes and a flat-ended double cutting tool consisting of two radial cutting edges opposite each other. The slot drills are designed primarily to be used with general machine applications. Each slot drill consists of end teeth to minimize chipping and improve durability. The materials used to make this slot drill are HSS, cobalt, and carbide, which play a crucial role in strengthening them and improving durability.

Different Types of Slot Drills
HSS Slot Drill: these are known as high-speed slot drills and are available in 2m to 32m diameters and are available with two end profiles known as a ball nose or a standard square nose.
Powder Metal Versions: These drills are available in PVD or CVD coatings. These coatings give them corrosion resistance.
Carbide Slot Drills: Carbide material makes the drills more rigid and faster than HSS. Therefore, carbide slot drills are the best for high-speed applications. They are ideally used with carbon steels, alloy steels, pre-hardened steels, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, and aluminium.
