Solenoid Valves

Solenoid valves, often called solenoids, are electromechanically operated valves and the most common fluid-controlling element in fluidics designed to distribute, close, release, and mix fluids. Solenoids allow highly reliable, efficient, and safe switching with robust material compatibility for extended life. A solenoid valve works precisely as it is electromechanically operated. A solenoid is a coil of wire, often cylindrical, and is employed as a switch or control for a mechanical device that, while carrying a current, functions like a magnet, drawing a moving core into the coil (such as a valve). Additionally, they are made from high-quality stainless steel, brass, aluminium, PVC, polyamide, resin, and plastic materials with different default valve positions.

Functions Of Solenoid Valves

Solenoid valves are best for environments where the fluid flow needs to be automatically controlled. There are several variants in valve design with different ports and fluid pathways possible in typical valves. A 2-way valve has two ports linked when open, allowing fluid to pass through them. The valve is called open when the solenoid is not activated, while closed when the valve is closed even when the solenoid is off.

Types of Solenoid Valves

Solenoid valves are categorised into direct-acting and pilot-operated valves and include:

Typical Applications

In fluid power pneumatic and hydraulic systems, valves are used to:

  • Operate Cylinders
  • Fluid Power Motors, or
  • Bigger Industrial Valves.

Solenoids are also used in the following:

  • Sprinkler irrigation systems
  • Domestic dishwashers and
  • Washing machines to regulate water input.
  • To activate the CO2 hammer valve in paintball gun triggers.

H262-602BW.6/DC, Asco

Two-way, WRAS, N/C Water Valves Two-way, brass-bodied WRAS listed solenoid valves with anti-water hammer devices fitted as standard. They have a zero bar minimum operating pressure and are normally closed. The compact, lightweight unit may be mounted in any position (however, for optimum life, certain models will work best when the solenoid coil is mounted vertically and upright). Series 238 solenoid valves incorporate "G" (BSP Parallel) threaded ports, while Series 262 solenoid valves offer 15mm compression fitting connection ports. The moulded electrical spade connection is based on ISO 4400/EN 175301-803, form A specifications and a DIN 43650 connector is supplied as standard. Standards UK WFBS listed Compact solenoid valves suitable for most gas and fluid handling applications. Where practical, valves are shown with a schematic diagram showing the (circuit) function. The diagram is laid out so that the left-hand side of the diagram describes the valves operation when the coil is energised. When the coil is de-energised, the spring (or servo-assist) return controls the valve and is described on the right-hand side of the diagram. The 3 / 2-way designation indicates a valve with three ports and two modes of operation. It is normal practice to refer to 2 / 2-way valves as two ways. The port designations A, B, P, P1, P2 and R are used on the schematic diagrams and are marked on the valve bodies. Valve bodies are marked for a specific circuit function but can often be used for other functions. Reference to the schematic diagrams and technical specifications indicates the appropriate connections and pressure capabilities when an alternative circuit function is required.
