Gate valves, also referred to as slide or knife valves, are essential pneumatic shut-off valves utilised to regulate the flow of various media (such as liquids or gases) in pipelines. They are characterised by a gate or wedge-shaped disc that moves perpendicular to the flow pathway to either block or allow flow. These linear motion valves in which a plain closure component slides into the flow stream to provide shut-off. They are the most used type of valves that can be found in almost every setting. Additionally, Gate valves are built to reduce pressure drop at full opening and provide a complete closure to stop fluid flow. The liquid flow direction remains constant, and the diameter through which the process fluid passes is nearly identical to that of the pipe, resulting in minimal pressure drop when fully opened.
The gate, which is the blocking element, is either raised or lowered by turning an actuator or handwheel. Gate valves are created to be fully open or closed. They are not suitable for throttling or managing flow because partial openings can cause erosion and damage to the gate and seats. When fully open, the gate is wholly out of the flow path, providing minimal resistance to flow and ensuring a very low-pressure drop across the valve.
