Power Distribution, Surge Protectors

Surge protectors, also known as surge suppressors, are protective devices designed to protect equipment from power surges or voltage spikes. They absorb high power surges and prevent them from being transferred to the plugged-in items. Surge protection is critical for various situations, ranging from large businesses, offices, homes, and industries to protect their valuable assets. In addition, these protectors reduce appliance downtime, shield against lost revenue, provide home security, protect fuses and other electrical equipment, and most importantly, protect lives.

Available Power Distribution, Surge Protectors

The available protection types are surge protectors, outlet boxes, outlet strips, surge protection modules, power distribution units (PDU), and surge protectors for media lines only. The different current ranges from 150 mA to 310 A with varying voltages ranging from 5 V to 1.5 kV and the energy variants ranging from 50 J to 6480 J. They are made from plastic, steel, aluminium, and metal.

Why are Surge Protectors Important?

Surge protectors help protect electrical devices from brief power surges caused by a wide range of things, including power outages, lightning storms, faulty wiring, etc. A surge protector will prevent any power surge generated to protect your equipment and valuable assets at your workplace or home.

How Do They Work?

Surge suppressor units from line protection distribution backups protect devices by diverting or blocking the surplus voltage to the ground. They work like a pressure-sensitive valve containing metal oxide parts called varistors (or MOV), which ensure the devices receive a stable power level by the diversion of any extra voltage. Upon detecting a high-voltage level, the MOV reduces the resistance while increasing the resistance when the voltage level is too low.

Applications of Power Distribution, Surge Protectors

Surge protectors feature a wide range of domestic and industrial applications, such as protecting the electrical installation, like consumer units, wiring, and accessories, from transient overvoltage.

Furthermore, they are ideal for protecting sensitive electronic equipment connected to the installation, including:

  • Computers
  • Televisions
  • Washing machines
  • Safety circuits
  • Fire detection systems
  • Emergency lighting.

They also come with a mixture of integrated status indicators with floating signal circuit and grounded reference potential. All products are highly reliable and of excellent quality. Features and Benefits - 6 mm overall width - Push in connection technology - Integrated status indicator without auxiliary energy and option of remote signalling Surge Protection Devices, SPDs (DIN-rail) Voltage surges, often referred to as spikes or transients are typically caused by switching of fluorescent lights, fuses blowing or nearby lightning activity. The worst voltage surges are usually caused by lightning and can reach up to 6000V, with current surges of over 3000A. The maximum size of the voltage and current surges depends on the location within the building's wiring system. BS7671: 2011 Amendment 1 Sections 443 and 534 cover risk assessment and provides guidance on protection of electronic equipment for installation engineers to follow. The fullest information on lightning and surge protection comes from the BSEN 62305 series of standards.
