Captive Nuts

A captive nut, also known as cage nut, consists of a kind of square nut made up of a spring steel cage that wraps across the nut. This captive contains two wings when pressed to permit the cage to be put into the squared-oriented holes. For example, equipment racks that are contained in the mounting rails, where the wings were allowed, and they fixed the nut in the place available behind the hole. The current nut design requires insertion tools to install the nut into the appropriate hole. Advancement has been made in the design that squeeze-and-tab allows for equipment-easily configuration.

This square hole nut can be used at the place where it can be punched. Initially, a captive nut makes use of a spring clip that grabs the nut, and a thin sheet holds the slide on edge. Using a square hole cage nut can only be fixed at a particular distance from the thin edge plate. It is out-performed due to its square and rounded holes.

The captive nut is manufactured slightly loosely to ensure adjustment and alignment if some minute changes in the captive are required. This mitigates the probability that the threads can be stripped during device configuration and removal. Spring steel clip dimension has the potential to choose the thickness of the panel where the nut can be clipped. The clip dimensions define the range of hole diameters to which the clip will firmly retain the nut in square-hole nuts. The clip dimensions govern the distance from the panel edge to the hole in the case of slide-on nuts.

Applications

A captive nut is the most common type of mount device that exists in square holes with 19-inch racks and 9.5mm square hole size. These are the four most used sizes in the industry, UNF 10-32 and UNC 12-24, are commonly used in North America, whereas M5 is used in the rest of the world. Even though some current rack-mount devices are compatible with square-hole racks without the need for bolts, the captive nut is used to secure many rack-mount components.

Benefits

This square hole's nut offers many benefits over threaded holes. A range of various sizes of nuts and bolts can be used in the industry due to their scalability, robustness, and dynamic adjustment. On the other hand, if a screw is more tightened, it has to be replaced, whereas a pre-threaded hole couldn't be replaced with a new one. Because the hole gets stuck and can't be usable anymore. Lastly, square hole nuts are very convenient to apply on objects that are too thin or elastic to be threaded.
