An ambient light sensor is a major component in smart devices such as smartphones, notebooks, laptops, LCDs, TVs and automotive displays. The ambient light can be sensed by using a photo detector to find the amount of ambient light present. And it can also dim the device screen to match it. This could prevent the screen from being too bright. This is because the audience pupil has to adapt to vision in the darkroom. Ambient Light Sensor Performance 

ST ambient light sensor provides an optimized suite and color filter with accurate responses that transforms ambient light into lux values with the best accuracy performance. 

Full-color sensors offer a compact optical sensing solution integrating the computation of the association color temperatures and the flickering frequencies extraction of the artificial light. The banding effect visible on the camera screen can be removed effectively.

Light dimension is fast and very precise; good to say thanks to the ADC and readout circuitry for every color channel, such as Red, Green, Blue, IR, clear and shiny. Moreover, the VD6283TX can pull out flickering light frequencies from 100 Hz to kHz.
