Display Drivers

Display Drivers are specialised integrated circuits (ICs) that serve as the interface between a computer's graphics processing unit (GPU) and a display panel (LCD, LED, OLED, etc.). They are essentially the "brains" of the display within the system, taking digital information and converting it into the precise electrical signals required to control each pixel on the screen.   

Primary Function that a Display Driver Performs

  • Data Receiving: Receives digital data demonstrating the image or video to be displayed from the GPU.
  • Signal Processing: Processes the incoming data, often include colour conversion, gamma correction, and other image improvements.
  • Timing Control: Produce authentic timing signals to manage the activation of rows and columns of pixels on display. This guarantees that the image is shown correctly and without distortion.   
  • Voltage & Current Regulation: Provides the required voltage and current to drive the individual pixels or subpixels on display. 
  • Communication Interfaces: The device interacts with the main processor and the display panel using various interfaces, including MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface), SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface), and I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit).

What are the Popular Display Driver Types?

DDICs are built to work with certain display technologies:

  • LCD: Manage the liquid crystals in LCD panels to modulate light transmission. 
  • LED: Regulate the current flowing through LEDs in LED displays to adjust their brightness and colour. 
  • OLED: To generate light, control the current flowing through organic LEDs in OLED displays. They require precise current control to obtain accurate colour and brightness.
  • Touch Controller ICs: These ICs are often closely integrated with DDICs in touchscreen devices. 

Application Potential of Display Drivers

  • Consumer Electronics: Include smartphones, tablets, wearables (smartwatches, fitness trackers), televisions, monitors, digital cameras and camcorders, handheld devices, and gaming console systems.
  • Automotive: Instrument cluster, infotainment systems, and head-up displays (HUDs).
  • Industrial & Medical: Industrial control panels, medical imaging devices, patient monitors, and other healthcare equipment.
