DC Power Connectors
DC power connectors, also known as barrel connectors, are electrical connectors specifically designed to supply direct current (DC) power from the main connection to a device. Typically, they serve to power small and medium equipment with added cable assemblies. These connectors are comprised of three components, i.e., jack, plug, and receptacle, to operate. Types of DC power connectors:
The DC power connector is classified into several types; however, the standard connectors include barrel connectors, DIN connectors, and USB connectors.
- Barrel Connectors
The barrel connector is the most standard and cost-effective type, which features an insulated cylindrical tip. The ring (sleeves) within the end accepts a pin from the socket counterpart. This design aims to ensure a smooth disconnect and reconnect action and to make a connection safe and secure. Rather than that, it has many types with varied dimensions that cannot be exchanged.
- DIN Connectors
DIN power connectors encase four socket contacts, or pins, in a circular housing. They are ideal for moderate power applications where barrel connectors cannot carry a specific amount of power.
- USB Connectors
Initially, USB connectors were designed to provide digital signals and DC power. However, the compatibility features such as USB power voltage levels of these connectors make them ideal for power-only applications. They also come in various variants with numerous uses in different environments.
Choosing the right DC Power Connectors:
Special care should be taken before selecting these connectors. It is crucial to consider the insertion depth, the diameter of the inner pin, and the outer sleeve to mate them properly between jacks and plugs.
