IC Socket Adapters
IC (Integrated Circuit) socket adapters are a type of placeholder designed to convert one IC socket type to another in a convenient and reliable method. They adopt transistors and ICs to transform them into an alternate form, such as a small eight-pin DIP socket to a JEDEC socket format. These adapters provide safe IC chip insertion and removal that would otherwise be damaged by heat and soldering if left unchanged.
Types of IC Sockets:
The following are some of the types of IC sockets.
- DIL (Dual-In-Line)
These sockets are available in a great range of numbers and feature bi-pins in parallel rows for matching their respective ICs.
- PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier)
They are ideal for situations where power circuits are formed and components are mounted onto a PCB in surface-mount technology.
Fitting IC socket adapters:
The surface mount pads on the top of the IC socket adapter are soldered to the surface mount device. At the adapter's bottom are DIP pins soldered to a printed circuit board (PCB) or combined with IC sockets.
What are the uses and benefits of IC socket adapters?
IC socket adaptors are very beneficial due to their cost-effectiveness in development costs as they limit redesigning boards for alternate packages.
These IC socket adaptors are best suited for environments with short lead pins, as in the case of desktops and server computers. Furthermore, they are also ideal for prototyping purposes, such as circuits, as their sockets provide a convenient means of component swapping.
