DIN 41612 Connectors

DIN 41612 Connectors are the most commonly used in a rack-based electrical system. These connectors are smart enough in performance with a 2A per pin current transferring capacity and 500 V working voltage. Both the values may vary due to the change in safety and environmental conditions. The most often used DIN41612 connectors are in VMEbus and NuBus systems. These connectors are also used in Pancon, most commonly used connector is male DIN41612 connectors on Eurocords plugged into female DIN41612 on the backplane in a 19-inch rack chassis.

 Uses of DIN Connectors 

The main use of DIN41612 connectors are motherboards and PCB connectors. The primary objective could be their board-to-board strong, reliable connection. These connectors have one, two, or three rows of connections, called rows a,b, and c. two-row contacts are using a+b or rows a+c. DIN connectors may have either 16 or 32 columns; therefore, the acceptable permutation is 16,32,48, 64, and 96 connections. These rows and columns are placed to each other on a 0.1-inch grid pitch. It may control the insertion and removal force, and the total durable available grades are three.

Usually, the female DIN41612 connector contains press-fit connections instead of solder pin connections to prevent thermal shock to the backplane. 

DIN Connector Types

  • Din connectors are of various types, including B, C, D, F, M, and R. There are different sizes, standard, half, third, and improved sizes, to meet the criteria that all the manufacturing companies design. The DIN41612 design classified into three classes; each class's specification is varying, as follows: 
  • Class 1 is the most reliable form of DIN connector, and this connector has the potential to carry 250 mating cycles; it is then kept open for 10 days to sulfur dioxide gas is then added to 250 other mating cycles; therefore, it reaches the overall mating cycles size of 500. After passing through this process, there would be no major defects in functionality, for instance, enhancement in contact resistance. 
  • Class 2 is the subsequent level from down in the connector range. This connector carries 200 mating cycles; similarly, this will also expose to 4 days of gas sulfur dioxide, then another 200 mating cycles. Therefore, its size may reach up to 400 mating cycles. 
  • Class 3 is good enough for 50 mating cycles, and similarly, this will pass through the same process. 

Generally, class 1 is the highest, and it is used for military and aviation applications. Class 2 is used for industrial applications, and class 3 is typically used, where reliability is critical, and the number of insertions is probably too low.
