What is a Cable Gland?

A cable gland is a mechanical cable entry device that seals various terminals, connectors, enclosures, or electrical devices to attach and secure the end of an electrical cable. Cable glands also serve as a strain relief, grounding, insulation, and connection device. These glands are used to mount a cable in a hole already drilled. Some cable glands consist of two sections that fit on the opposite side of the cabling and create a watertight seal for a cable. These cable glands are installed by drilling a hole in the enclosure wall and attaching each side of the cable gland.

Types of Cable Glands

There are many cable glands on the market today, such as metal and plastic glands.

Some of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a cable gland are listed below.

  • Metal Cable Glands: These cable glands are robust and ideal for challenging environments and can withstand the high demands in harsher climates. They come in brass, stainless steel, and nickel-plated.
  • Plastic Cable Glands: Plastic glands have a larger cable entry area due to their clamp and seal design. They are suitable for flexible cables and offer high strain relief. Plastic fittings are available in polyamide and nylon materials.
  • Thread Size: Metric (M) and Panzer-Gewinde (PG) threads are the two most common gland thread kinds (PG). M6 to M63 are the metric sizes, while PG7 to PG21 are the Panzer-Gewinde sizes. Locknuts are frequently included with cable glands; however, their accessories can also be purchased separately.
  • Ingress Protection (IP): When choosing a cable gland, the IP rating is another crucial factor. IP44 to IP69K are the different protection classes. The most common are IP67 and IP68. IP rated glands provide further protection against dust and moisture intrusion.
  • Installation of a Cable Gland: Before installing cable glands, it is essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure that all the live wires should be disconnected, and your cable glands aren't exposed to any solvents, chemicals, or dirt. Begin by detaching the nut from the cable gland and peeling back the outer sheath of the cabling to a length that fits the size of the gland with a suitable tool. If necessary, remove the inner metal armour and insert the right end of the gland into the cable. To secure the gland in place, lay the peeled sheath or armour around the gland and reattach the nut by carefully tightening it with a wrench or equivalent tool.

Applications of Cable Gland

There are several types of applications of a cable gland—consistently used by electrical engineers needed to run cables and wires to an area that needs to be enclosed or sealed

The typical applications of cable glands include:

  • Aerospace
  • Cleanroom
  • Environmental protection
  • Fire Protection
  • Industrial
  • Panel Or Enclosure
  • Marine
  • Power Or Utility, Flow Meters
  • Machinery With Delicate Internals
  • Railway
  • Telecommunications, and
  • Underwater Power Generators.

Metric Cable Gland These cable glands are used throughout a number of industries, in relation to cable and wiring, particularly in instrumentation and control, automated systems, lighting, data and telecommunications environments. What are Cable Glands? Cable glands, also known as cable connectors are essential when it comes to terminating cables in a hazardous or a harsh environment, sealing and grounding which are all a necessity when it comes to safely passing a wire or a cable through an enclosure. The ingress protection provides a high level of environmental resistance, making them ideal in conditions where protection from moisture, fluid, dirt and dust is needed. These glands are to be used with screened cables and are designed to connect the screen of the cable to the enclosure screening system. This is achieved by the use of 2 tapered rings applying force onto an endless spring washer against the screen to ensure a positive contact. These cable glands for use with a screened cable are made from brass material and are metallic in colour. They have a polyolefin rubber seal, which provides good resistance to both chemicals and the weather. They are highly durable and operate in temperatures that are expansive. These metal glands have metric threads which provide strain relief for cables, preventing them from breaking and ensuring their reliability and stability. Features and Benefits • IP68 rated cable glands • Quick and easy to assemble • Various thread sized glands available depending upon your requirements • Different cable diameters available • Nickel plated brass body cable glands with santoprene (polyolefin) rubber seal • Metallic in colour • Glands operate over an expansive temperature range • Accessory locknut is NOT included
