  • Inductive proximity sensors

These sensing devices are designed to detect metals or metallic objects using an electromagnetic field. The integral sensors detect the oscillations up and down upon detecting metallic objects in the vicinity. These variations result in generating output signals that are detected via a threshold circuit. The sensors’ size, type, and shape verify the operating ranges or the type of object the sensor is detecting. 

  • Capacitive proximity sensors

Capacity proximity sensors are designed to detect metals and non-conductive materials. Unlike inductive sensors, capacitive proximity sensors detect objects using electrical fields. These sensors change their states triggered by the capacitance changes in the sensing areas. These sensors are widely used in a variety of applications. For instance, proximity sensors are used in various smartphones. When the phone is held closer to the ear, the sensor detects it as an object and switches off its screen. Other examples include their use in switches that sense variations in hand gestures.
