Encoders

An encoder is a specialised device designed to convert a mechanical motion (linear or rotational) or position changes into an electrical signal, which is then analysed to determine position, speed, direction, or counts. These devices provide essential feedback from the physical world in the form of codes and are interpreted by control systems to extract the desired information. Encoders incorporate various sensors, such as hall effect sensors and position sensors, to provide real-time feedback for different details. Additionally, they are crucial in applications requiring precise control and measurement, including robotics, automation, industrial machinery, and more.

Popular Types of Encoders

Encoders come in various types based on their motion types, output signals, and technology. Our range of standard types include: 

• Rotary Encoders – Rotary encoders are built to measure rotational position, speed, or angle. They come in either an incremental encoder or an absolute encoder. Incremental encoders generate pulses as they rotate, providing information about direction and speed. Absolute encoders are well-built to output a unique code for each position, providing absolute position information.
• Linear Encoders – Linear encoders measure linear displacement (straight-line movement) and are commonly used in precision measuring instruments. Similar to the rotary encoder types, linear encoders come in incremental and absolute linear encoders but measure linear distance.
